I have many concerns with the way we discuss the balance between national security and civil liberties as if they were mutually exclusive objectives on opposite sides of the scale. I believe they mutually reinforce each other. What makes this nation strong is the relationship between the government and the governed. That which drives a wedge between the two weakens our nation.

For the Record

For the Record is the newest publication of the Center on Law and Security. Each issue of For the Record will present facts and non-partisan analysis around a central issue related to national security. The publication will juxtapose and combine the questions of practitioners with those of policy makers and will be co-edited by Karen J. Greenberg, the Center’s Executive Director and Michael Sheehan, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Center and Former Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism for the NYPD.
